The Museum of the Western Prairie will host the Lonesome Dove Photo Exhibit from Tuesday, September 1, through Saturday, October 31.

To kick off the Lonesome Dove Photo Exhibit, the museum will host a talk with author George Getshow. This is the perfect event for Lonesome Dove fans, of the book, the miniseries, and the photographs!

About the author:

George Getschow, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, worked for The Wall Street Journal as a reporter, bureau chief, and Mexico correspondent for 16 years. He was a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2017 for General Nonfiction and in 2013 and 2014 for feature writing. He was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2012 for “distinctive literary achievement.” He’s written numerous essays, long-form narratives, and investigative stories for magazines and newspapers in Texas and across the country. He’s the editor of Pastures of the Empty Page, a collection of essays by prominent writers, mostly from Texas, about Larry McMurtry’s life, legacy, and titanic influence on the literature of the West. Pastures of the Empty Page, published by UT-Press, will be released September 5.

Lonesome Dove—Larry McMurtry’s epic novel of two aging Texas Rangers who drive a herd of stolen cattle 2,500 miles from the Rio Grande to Montana to found the first ranch there—captured the public imagination and has never let it go. The Lonesome Dove miniseries, which first aired on CBS in 1989, lassoed an even wider audience.

Capturing the sweeping visual imagery of the original miniseries, the Lonesome Dove exhibition presents fifty-five framed classic images taken during filming by Bill Wittliff, a renowned photographer, writer, and executive producer (with Suzanne De Passe) of Lonesome Dove. The images, however, are worlds apart from ordinary production stills, depicting an extraordinary union of art, literature, and history.

The exhibit travels to Altus in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities.
