“Drills from General Winfield Scott’s Infantry Tactics” living history program

In September, Fort Gibson Historic Site staff will offer a series of living history programs about 19th-century military training following a manual from the 1800s. The programs will follow Infantry Tactics; or, Rules for the Exercise and Maneuvers of the United States Infantry, written by General Winfield Scott in 1835.
On Saturday, September 13, site interpreter Seth Goff will continue Basic Drill from Scott’s Manual with an 1840s soldiers’ drill. Visitors of all ages who wish to participate can expect a 15-minute introductory lesson from the School of the Soldier. This includes the first drill commands a newly enlisted soldier would have learned such as attention, left face, right face, etc.
On Saturday, September 20, site interpreter Seth Goff will continue School of the Soldier with some more advanced drill commands, including wheeling and marching to the oblique. Visitors able and willing to participate for 15 minutes can practice some of these more advanced drill commands (and receive a catch-up lesson for those who missed the lessons from September 13).
On Saturday, September 27—the last Saturday of September—site interpreter Seth Goff will be demonstrating musket drills, and give some instruction on the tactics used by musket armed infantry.
These programs are included with paid admission and will be held at the log fort located at 110 E Ash Street in Fort Gibson, OK. On scheduled Living History Saturdays, visitors can stop by from 10 a.m. to noon, and again from 1 to 4 p.m. to participate in a variety of 19th-century military activities, discussions, and demonstrations.
