On Friday, May 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the Oklahoma History Center Museum will present a special screening of the Smithsonian Channel episode The Green Book: Guide to Freedom. Explore the history of The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide that helped African Americans find safe places to stay, eat, and travel—especially along Route 66—during segregation.

The event will take place at Frenzy Brewing in Edmond.

The Green Book: Guide to Freedom film highlights the history of The Negro Motorist Green Book. The travel guide was published by Victor Green, a Black postal carrier from Harlem. It helped Black travelers to find restaurants, hotels, and other businesses that would welcome them without discrimination. The guide served as an important resource for Black travelers seeking a safe way to travel across America during segregation. It became a roadmap for safe passage within a then-segregated country.

A historian-led discussion about Oklahoma’s connection to The Negro Motorist Green Book in Oklahoma history will feature Ed Threatt of Threatt Filling Station and other panelists. This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. This event is part of the Oklahoma Historical Society’s History OffCenter series.
