The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center will host a six-session Museum OKadmey course in 2022 to train volunteers. The classes will be held on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., beginning on Saturday, January 15, and concluding on Saturday, April 2.

The course is designed to train volunteers, living history interpreters, and museum docents for the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. Each of the six sessions will cover the history of northwestern Oklahoma and provide the attendees with a basic understanding of museums, heritage, and public history. Registration is required. Meeting One: What is a museum? What is northwestern Oklahoma? 
Saturday, January 15, 9 to 11 a.m.
Learn the basics of the modern museum and survey northwestern Oklahoma as a geographical, historical, and cultural area.

Meeting Two: Historic Buildings and Early Oklahoma 
Saturday, February 5, 9 to 11 a.m.
Discover how historic buildings are maintained and explore pre-statehood Oklahoma.

Meeting Three: 1893
Saturday, February 19, 9 to 11 a.m.
Learn the importance of a single year in both regional, national, and international arenas as we discuss world fairs, the Panic of 1893, and the Cherokee Outlet land run.

Meeting Four: Museum Collections, Farms, and Energy 
Saturday, March 5, 9 to 11 a.m.
Discover the basics of object collection, registration, and preservation. Then, explore how agriculture and energy shaped Northwestern Oklahoma.

Meeting Five: The Archive and the Recent (or not-so-recent) Past 
Saturday, March 19, 9 to 11 a.m.
Visit the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center’s document and photo collection and learn about the recent history and growth of Northwestern Oklahoma.

Meeting Six: The People in the Museum
Saturday, April 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
You get to run the museum! Learn best practices in public-facing museum volunteers and put these skills to work. Who knows what will happen!
