This fall, step into the world of the 1830s as the Fort Gibson Historic Site brings to life the routines and stories of soldiers once stationed at the fort. Join us on Saturdays, September 5, 19, and 26, with activities running from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 4 p.m.

Soldiers assigned to Fort Gibson had to maintain clean barracks, take turns cooking food in the mess hall, and attend musket and marching drills. The work didn’t stop there. They also worked as gardeners, carpenters, blacksmiths, clerks, and performed other duties as assigned to maintain Fort Gibson as the farthest western fort in the 1830s.

Seth Goff, historical interpreter at Fort Gibson Historic Site, will give an overview of the daily life of a soldier with demonstrations of soldiers’ drill and musket cleaning, and maintenance. He will also give an overview of the basic food items provided to the soldiers in the 1830s.

The program will take place in the palisade, located at 110 E. Ash St. in Fort Gibson. Guests should check in at the palisade admissions office. The living history event is included with paid admission to the site. Members of the Oklahoma Historical Society always get in free. This event takes place outdoors, so dress appropriately.
