On Saturday, August 16, at 1 p.m., David Fowler (Cherokee) will discuss the role of the Cherokee Nation in the Civil War. Fowler is a regional director in the Museums and Historic Sites Division of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Native Americans made up a significant portion of those fighting in the battle on July 17, 1863. Men from the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Seminole, and Muscogee (Creek) nations fought in this battle, which was the largest of more than 107 documented hostile encounters in Indian Territory.

The event will be held inside the Visitor Center and is included with paid admission to the site.
