TRIPPLEHORN, JEANNE MARIE (1963– ).

An Emmy-nominated actor, Jeanne Marie Tripplehorn was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Thomas J. and Suzanne Ferguson Tripplehorn on June 10, 1963. Soon after the girl’s birth, her father, a professional musician, joined the Gary Lewis and the Playboys rock and roll band. Remaining in Tulsa with her mother, Jeanne Tripplehorn attended Tulsa public schools, graduated from Edison Preparatory High School in 1981, and studied briefly at the University of Tulsa.

Tripplehorn entered the entertainment industry by working in local Tulsa television and radio. In 1986 she moved to New York and entered the Juilliard School Drama Division, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1990. After graduating, she appeared in several off-Broadway productions, including seventeenth-century author John Ford’s play ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, but soon transitioned into film.

Her motion-picture career rapidly developed. She followed her first movie, Basic Instinct (1992, Michael Douglas), with The Firm (1993, Tom Cruise), Reality Bites (1994, Ben Stiller), and Waterworld (1995, Kevin Costner). Over the next decades she appeared in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999, Hugh Grant), Relative Values (2000, Julie Andrews), Swept Away (2002, Madonna), and numerous other films.

Tripplehorn is a popular choice for television series and miniseries. Her performance in Big Love in 2006–11 drew nominations for a Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama (2006 and 2007) and for a Women’s Image Network Award for Best Actress Drama Series (2010). A 2009 made-for-television movie titled Grey Gardens told the story of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with Tripplehorn in the role of the former First Lady. The performance garnered her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie and also an Online Film and Television Association (OFTA) nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture or Miniseries. Not long afterward, Criminal Minds, a nighttime network television series, included Tripplehorn in a main role in forty-eight episodes during the 2012‒14 seasons. Her work into the 2020s has included roles in four major miniseries, including Mrs. America (2020), The Gilded Age (2022), The Terminal List (2022), and The Lowdown (2025–27), a project of Oklahomans Ethan Hawke and Sterlin Harjo and also including Tulsa actor Tim Blake Nelson.

As the twenty-first century progressed, the Internet augmented the traditional methods of delivering creative narrative. While not a new field of endeavor in the entertainment business, “voice acting” became increasingly popular in animated features and movies as well as in audio-only formats online. Various Internet-based narrative podcasts (reminiscent of the radio plays offered during the 1940s and 1950s) often involve “A-list” actors like Tripplehorn. Her work in this line has included the series Exeter (2018–23), BoJack Horseman (2019), and The Big Fix: A Jack Bergin Mystery (2025).

Highly regarded and honored as a versatile and hardworking actor, Jeanne Marie Tripplehorn is married to fellow actor Leland Orser. The couple has one child.
