Monogrammed Brick Stories
Brick: Lande, I. W.
Contributed by Lucille Jackson
I. W. Lane (1865-1953) was an owner of a dry goods store in Talladega, AL, until racial tension sent the family, his wife, Mary, and five little kids packing by night to Red Bird, OK. In Oklahoma he owned a cotton gin and the Lane Construction Co. In 1939 Mr. Lane, with the help of the NAACP, sued three counties regarding voter rights for blacks in OK and took the case all the way to the Supreme Court (Lane vs Wilson). A sign at the entrance of the city reads Home of Statesman I. W. Lane He is also the grandfather of a distinguished Tuskegee Airman, Lt. Earl L. Lane.

In 2012 the Oklahoma Historical Society invited those who purchased one of the monogrammed bricks paving the Red River Journey at the Oklahoma History Center to share about the person or group their brick honors. Below is a list of those who submitted stories and the message shown on their brick. Use the links below to read the contributed story.
