Monogrammed Brick Stories
Brick: McBride, John Luther
Contributed by Ronald J. Owens
The post office in Luther, Oklahoma Territory, was established on July 26, 1898, and was named for the son of Charles Graham Jones, former mayor of Oklahoma City. John Luther McBride was born on November 22, 1898, in Luther, and the doctor who delivered him (at home, the usual custom in those days) told his mother (my grandmother) that he was the first white male child born in Luther. There had been several black male children born before him and all had the name Luther incorporated in their names and she should do likewise. And she did.

In 2012 the Oklahoma Historical Society invited those who purchased one of the monogrammed bricks paving the Red River Journey at the Oklahoma History Center to share about the person or group their brick honors. Below is a list of those who submitted stories and the message shown on their brick. Use the links below to read the contributed story.
This project was made possible by a generous donation from Catherine B. Wootten.
