Learn About 1840s Military Life During Education Day at Fort Towson Historic Site
FORT TOWSON, Okla. — The Fort Towson Historic Site will host a day full of educational experiences on Thursday, March 5, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The site will bring history to life with a free, public living history education day. It will teach what life was like at Fort Towson more than 180 years ago, offering multiple learning experiences about life at the military outpost during the 1840s, when it served as a vital resupply point for soldiers headed south to engage in the Mexican-American War.
The fort will be brought back to life with living historians wearing period clothing as the public experiences historical demonstrations, including the use of tools, laundress and domestic skills, drills and activities specific to the fort’s military history and the surrounding area. Visitors can also learn about the history of the sutler’s store, which served as a source of goods and merchandise for soldiers and the surrounding towns until the fort’s closure in 1854. The event is open to the public, but groups must register in advance.
