Fort Towson Historic Site will host History Day Camp for kids ages nine to 13 from Tuesday, May 27, through Thursday, May 29. The camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

During the three-day camp, young people can explore the site with physical and experiential learning activities that will encourage them to learn what life was like in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Historical interpreters will lead campers in hands-on activities such as archaeology, military drills, old-fashioned games, and hands-on crafts.

Whether taking part in 19th-century ways to communicate, learning about period artillery, or just enjoying the beauty of nature, this camp experience will encourage all types of learners to be curious about their surroundings. Some camp activities will take kids into the kitchen to experience the time-honored art of bread baking and enjoying their fresh-baked goods. Various crafts, art projects, card playing and videos will be planned during lunch.

Registration is required and limited to 15 students on a first come, first served basis. You may register by calling 580-873-2634, emailing fttowson@history.ok.gov or visiting the Fort Towson Historic Site. This is a FREE camp thanks to a grant from the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation. The deadline to apply is May 10. The Fort Towson Historic Site is located at 896 N. 4375 Rd. in Fort Towson.

This camp was made possible by a grant from the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation Fund.
