“Little Wars: Toy Soldiers for Training and Gaming” program
Toy soldiers have historically served as instruments for tabletop war gaming and military planning since antiquity. Site interpreter Seth Goff will deliver a living-history program examining the production methods, materials, and historical applications of toy soldiers in tabletop games. The program will take place on Friday, December 18, and Saturday, December 19, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m., and is included with admission. Fort Gibson Historic Site staff are ready for our annual winter tradition- Gingerbread Bake Day! On Saturday, December 19, the site’s head baker will be working with our 1860s bake oven to churn out giant gingerbread cookies for visitors to decorate in 19th-century style. On Saturday, December 19, the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will host two guided tours in celebration of the winter solstice. Anna Vincent, the current director of the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, will lead the tours. Our Journeys exhibit closes
The traveling exhibit Our Journeys, presented by Vietnamese Boat People, will be on display in the Oklahoma History Center through January 4, 2027. Created by New Jersey-based nonprofit Vietnamese Boat People, the exhibition centers the voices of Vietnamese Americans through oral histories, photographs, and interactive elements that explore migration, memory, and resilience across generations. Honoring our Ancestors: The Art of Beth Loftin exhibit closes
The exhibit Honoring our Ancestors: The Art of Beth Loftin will remain open at the Cherokee Strip Museum and Rose Hill School through February 2, 2027. The art of Beth Ann Loftin combines mixed-media paintings and sculpture. She combines traditional Western portraiture with contemporary techniques and color work. Faces of the Mother Road: The Lost Portraits of S. J. Tyler exhibit closes
The Oklahoma History Center Museum exhibit Faces of the Mother Road: The Lost Portraits of S. J. Tyler will remain open through Friday, April 30. The exhibition features photographs by an Afton photographer whose glass-plate negatives were rediscovered in 2023. Tyler operated a photography studio in Afton beginning in 1913, more than a decade before Route 66 was established.
