About This Index

More than 2,700 entries are available in this index. These materials pertain to individuals with disabilities, institutions, policy makers, staff, and other topics related to the history of developmental disabilities in Oklahoma. Most articles date from 1872 to the 1930s, with a few extending into the 1970s.

About the Newspaper Card File

In 1937 the Works Project Administration (WPA), in partnership with the Oklahoma Historical Society, began a project to catalog and index the OHS Newspaper Archives. This WPA project began as S179 and was renewed two years later in 1939 as S179A. Near the end of 1939, approximately 368,000 cards had been filed, which covered five thousand volumes of newspapers. Of those, ninety-seven different newspapers from thirty-four towns had been identified and indexed.

The index cards are still in use and available for use in the OHS Research Center.
