Blacksmith and Farrier Demonstration

The Cherokee Strip Museum invites you to step back in time on Saturday, April 18, for a live blacksmithing and farrier demonstration perfect for all ages!
Farriers are craftsmen who trim and shoe horses.
At 10 a.m., farrier James Marshall will perform a traditional hot shoeing on a horse, showing techniques used during the 1893 Land Run era when skilled hoof care was essential to keeping transportation, farming, and daily life moving across rural Oklahoma. At 11 a.m., blacksmith Tom Nelson and apprentice Tucker Vollmer will forge a horseshoe into a practical horse pick, highlighting the resourcefulness and craftsmanship that made blacksmiths vital members of early frontier communities.
The event is free and open to the public. Guests can watch up close, ask questions, and experience these historic trades in action, and will also get the opportunity to take home a horse pick or cross made by the blacksmith on the day of the event.
