Virtual Field Trip with Dr. Theodore Gonzalves

On Monday, May 6, the Oklahoma History Center’s Learning and Engagement department will host a virtual field trip in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution. The session for elementary students is from 10 to 11 a.m., and the high school session is from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Dr. Theodore Gonzalves, curator of Asian Pacific American History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will discuss artifacts and objects featured in his book Smithsonian Asian Pacific American History, Art, and Culture in 101 Objects.

Additional material shared during the virtual field trip will include an overview of the Oklahoma History Center and Museum’s Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) educational trunk, a brief lesson on AAPI history, a discussion with students about being a museum curator, and other educational resources.

The virtual field trip will take place on Microsoft Teams. Educators should register their class(es) online in advance. The sessions will not be recorded to protect the students’ identities. Discussion is encouraged, and questions will be allowed. During the virtual field trip, teachers will be instructed to keep their cameras off and mute their microphones.

Oklahoma Restaurants Roundtable

On Wednesday, May 8, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Oklahoma History Center, in collaboration with the Bigger Than Food Foundation, will host a roundtable discussion on the history and evolution of the food industry and restaurants. This roundtable will feature historians and current restaurant owners from the Oklahoma City metro.

The discussion will take place in the Chesapeake Event Center from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a networking hour from 8 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This is a pay-what-you-can event, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. Attendees are required to register in advance as space is limited.

Pinhole Camera Workshop with Jim Meeks

On Saturday, June 15, from 1 to 4 p.m., photographer, artist, and OHS Photo Archivist Jim Meeks will provide an introduction and historical overview of pinhole cameras. In the class, students will have the opportunity to make their own pinhole cameras. Meeks will also lead the group in creating a camera obscura using the classroom space to explore the concept of creating pinhole images.

The workshop is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers. The class will be held in the classrooms on the first floor of the Oklahoma History Center.

Useable Block Printing Class

A class focusing on the art of block printing will take place at the Oklahoma History Center on Saturday, June 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will learn about the practice before carving a block print design on linoleum and use the block to print on fabric.

Registration is $20 for Oklahoma Historical Society members and $25 for nonmembers, and all supplies are included in the cost. The registration deadline is Saturday, June 15. The class is limited to 12 people.

Flower Art Class

The Oklahoma History Center will offer a flower art class on Saturday, July 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees will learn basic flower art skills while creating a piece of art by placing dried flowers and petals in their own design.

Registration is $25 for Oklahoma Historical Society members and $30 for nonmembers, and all supplies are included in the cost. The registration deadline is Saturday, July 13. The class is limited to 12 people.

Cyanotypes with Jim Meeks

Photographer, artist, and OHS Photo Archivist Jim Meeks will teach participants the history of sun printing and how to create cyanotype art on Saturday, September 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. Cyanotypes are one of the oldest photographic printing processes and use sunlight and water to create unique impressions. This workshop will pay special attention to cyanotypes on fabric, and participants will create art to take home with them. Participants are encouraged to print photo negatives and objects they would like to use to create prints.

The class is $30 for Oklahoma Historical Society members and $35 for nonmembers.

Introduction to Knitting: Make Your Own Mug Cozy

On Saturday, November 16, the Oklahoma History Center will hold a knitting workshop. Participants will learn basic knitting skills and knit a custom mug cozy for themselves or as a gift for another. The class is intended for beginners. The class will enjoy a hot chocolate bar with all the fixings and snacks.

The class is $20 for Oklahoma Historical Society members and $25 for nonmembers.
