The last Comanche chief, Quanah Parker was born c. 1850 in the Wichita Mountains. Parker avoided capture for many years before leading the Comanche peacefully to Fort Sill in 1875. He died in 1911 and was buried at Post Oak Mission. His remains were moved to Fort Sill in 1957. Comancheria, the domain of the Comanches from the early 1700s to mid 1800s, reached from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico east to the Cross Timbers and from the Arkansas River in Kansas south to the Pecos River and Rio Grande in Texas. The Wichita Mountains were centered in the heart of Comancheria and sacred to the Comanches.
