Tamaha was an important port and ferry crossing on the Arkansas River in the 1830s. Many Choctaw Indians were forcibly removed to Indian Territory by steamboat via the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers to Tamaha in 1831. A post office in Tamaha opened in 1884 and a jail was built in 1886. The last steamboat touched at Tamaha Landing in 1912.

Note: Granite marker replaced an aluminum marker that is currently located at the Tamaha jail site in Tamaha (approximately 10 miles northeast).
